Mercury Retrograde Oct 24 – Nov 13, 2026: The Exact Times

Mercury Retrograde, October 24 – November 13, 2026: The Exact Times

Most “Mercury retrograde” posts hand you a date range and a mood. Here are the actual times, to the minute, from NASA's ephemeris, and what the retrograde actually is. It is shorter than you have been told, and it is not an omen. It is geometry.

Mercury stations retrograde: October 24, 2026, 07:12 UT, at 20°59′ Scorpio

Mercury stations direct: November 13, 2026, 15:53 UT, at 5°02′ Scorpio

For twenty days Mercury appears to move backward through Scorpio, from 21° back to 5°, then turns forward again. It never leaves Scorpio. (On the US East Coast that is just after 3 a.m. on the 24th, and a little before 11 a.m. on the 13th.)

What “retrograde” is

Nothing stops. Mercury keeps orbiting the Sun at about 47 km per second. “Retrograde” describes how its motion looks from Earth: when we overtake it on the inside track, it appears to slide backward against the stars for a few weeks. It is a line-of-sight effect, the same one that makes the far lane seem to drift backward when you pass a slower car.

That is the whole mechanism. What you do with it is a separate question, and a more interesting one.

How I use it, and how I don't

I will not tell you to hide, or that your ex will text. What a retrograde is genuinely good for is the prefix re-: rereading, revising, revisiting, repairing. Finishing the thing you stalled on. The forward motion you are chasing is usually just the second draft of something you already began.

What I actually check, when someone asks me: where 21°–5° Scorpio falls in their chart. For one person that is the money house. For another it is the career angle. For another it lands on a natal planet, and the whole month reads differently. “It's Mercury retrograde” tells you almost nothing until you know where it lands.

How I know these times

The station times come from NASA / JPL's Horizons system (DE441 ephemeris), apparent geocentric ecliptic longitude, and each was checked with a straddle test: the motion's rate is positive before the station and negative after, clean to six decimals. Anyone can reproduce them: query Horizons for Mercury (199), geocentric, quantity 31, extra precision on.

The planets do not care whether you believe me. The numbers are checkable, so check them.
